Loch Etive

This shot was taken at the Glencoe end of Loch Etive, a 13 mile drive down single track road alongside the River Etive from Kinghouse near the rivers source on Rannoch Moor.

Although tranquil now, the loch was once a busy thoroughfare. From 1750 a well maintained track provided a route across the Highlands and in 1847 a steamer sailed from Oban to the north end of the Loch carrying Victorian tourists, who would then travel up Glen Etive by carriage to visit Glencoe.

Whilst travelling towards Glencoe, these Victorian visitors would have been met with the sight of the imposing Buachaille Etive Mòr and Buachaille Etive Beag, the “Herdsmen of the Glen”, as in modern times in our horseless carriages.

On the right of the shot, the remains of the pier used by the steamboat can still be seen.
