Loch Maree from Glen Docherty

This view is without a doubt everyone enjoys driving on the A832 West, and one which I have photographed many times.

Glen Docherty has the typical “U” shape caused by glaciation, a process which took 1.8 million years. At the west of the Glen lies Loch Maree and Kinlochewe whilst to the east is Achnasheen and the picturesque Loch a’Chroisg.

During excavations in 2004 archaeologists found evidence of ironworking at the head of Glen Docherty, and after radiocarbon dating discovered the earliest iron deposits were from the 11th century. further excavations revealed the use of a charcoal burning platform in the 15th to 17th  centuries. Also in the 17th century the north end of Loch Maree became the site of the first charcoal operated blast furnace in Scotland.
